Prologue: The Vault and the Lost Father
I was born in a place where the world outside was a myth, a half-remembered legend told by the oldest of the Vault dwellers. Vault 101 — the place we called home. A metal cocoon buried deep beneath the earth’s crust, designed to protect its residents from the horrors of the outside world. It was all I knew, and for the longest time, it was all I needed to know.
Life in the Vault was predictable. Safe. Boring, perhaps, but that was the point, wasn’t it? No threats. No danger. Just the hum of the air filtration system, the soft, mechanical beat of the Vault’s heartbeat. Everyone had their role, their place in the system. Some were doctors, some were scientists, some were laborers. I grew up surrounded by these people, each with their own quirks, their own stories.
But nothing truly prepared me for the day I realized that this place wasn’t as safe as I had been led to believe. It wasn’t just the whispers in the halls, the quiet moments when people spoke about the Overseer with barely concealed resentment. No, it was the day my father left.
James. My father. The man who had been my rock, my teacher, and my protector. The one who had raised me with so much love, patience, and care. He was everything to me. His deep voice would soothe my fears, and his steady hands were a constant comfort in a world that seemed so controlled, so rigid. I didn’t know much about the world outside the Vault, but I did know that as long as my father was with me, I would be safe.
But then, he left. One day, just like that, my father disappeared into the night, leaving nothing but a cold silence in his wake. No explanation. No note. Just an absence that was more deafening than any noise.
I remember standing in the middle of my bedroom that night, staring at the empty space where my father had once been. The air felt thick, like something had changed in the very atmosphere of the Vault itself. My mind raced with thoughts, each one more terrifying than the last. Had something happened to him? Was he in trouble? Why had he left without a word?
The Overseer had his own theories, of course. He was always watching, always listening. He didn’t trust my father — and for all I knew, he had every reason not to. But I couldn’t just sit idly by. I couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling in my gut that told me I had to find him. My father was out there, somewhere in the vast unknown, and it was up to me to bring him back.
I had to leave Vault 101. I had to know the truth. But even the thought of leaving the safety of the Vault sent a cold shiver down my spine. The Vault was everything I had ever known. The outside world was a dangerous, hostile place. I had heard the stories. Monsters. Radiation. Bands of marauders. The world outside was a wasteland, a place that had been poisoned by the Great War.
But I had no choice.
