When Rose sees Joe in an Oxford bar, it is instant infatuation. He is everything that turns her on: a gifted musician with wit and high achiever. In her mind, at least, they are ideally matched. But Joe has no intention of settling down.

All Rose will ever be to him is part of his student past. Instead he embarks on a dazzling career that takes him abroad, leaving Rose alone with shattered dreams.

She knows what true happiness can be like. Her parents have always been very well married, and the late arrival of her kid sister, Lily, helped make the family complete. But when Joe returns and falls for Lily, a dangerous rivalry ensues...

This is an excellent read. Full of complex situations and ambivalent feelings amongst the characters. It's an interesting exploration of what happens when the bad guy wins and actually gets away with it. But does she? Here is a protagonist with everything going for her: brains, looks, money, successful career, yet she is compulsively driven to extreme measures to get the one thing she does not have and feels that without it her life is meaningless.

This read is getting a four out of five just because I felt it could have been a bit more introspective and could have developed the main characters' internal landscapes in a bit more depth. It seemed to read like an abridged version and I wanted more in the way of inner thinking. However I loved the fact that there was only minimal dialogue and that the narrator did not try to gender-ize the voices.

Well done!
