This is a story that is layered deep. Victorian, with almost a soft erotica feel to it. Mercy Dove drips sexuality, but in her family, blood tends to be dripping nearby.
On the surface, this is a story about dealing with what life hands you and using it to your advantage. Underneath you are looking at what it is like to be controlled, and how it can wear you down.
I can’t say too much because of spoilers for such a short story.
