My earlier books were published under the name Elizabeth McGregor, and my later ones under the name Elizabeth Cooke. I'm the author of 18 published novels and 2 non-fiction books. I live in the beautiful county of Dorset in southern England, close to the World Heritage Jurassic coast. I'm inspired by history, and many of my novels touch on actual events or people, such as the Franklin expedition of 1845 (THE ICE CHILD), the Victorian painter Richard Dadd (THE GIRL IN THE GREEN GLASS MIRROR) or the Edwardian plant explorer Ernest Wilson (A ROAD THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS). Similarly, my life experiences and family colour my work. For instance, when I was commissioned to write the RUTHERFORD PARK series, I was able to draw on my grandfather's life working in an English country house and also the life of my uncle who was tragically killed in the murderous chaos of the First World War. I research my work intensively. In THE WILD DARK FLOWERS I covered the sinking of the Lusitania, for instance. And in THE DAMNATION OF JOHN DONELLAN I was fortunate enough not only to have access to the original trial transcripts, but also family archives that had never been made available before. The book was reviewed by The Times as 'a masterpiece of research'. In January 2024, I self-published WHO KILLED MARY ASHFORD, a striking true-life crime from the early 19th century. The case of Mary's tragic death was never solved, although one man was tried twice and found innocent twice. The trial was a shambles, mainly because of prejudices in the prosecution and ignorance in society as a whole. As a result, the possibility of another assailant was overlooked. Investigating the issue of time (which was crucial) and the characters of local people who so coloured and distorted the case, I took two years to research this book. I also write under the pen name E M SCOTT for my crime series. The first was THE MISSING AND THE DEAD and the second is THE MAN NEXT DOOR. The third in the series, A QUEIT KILLING, will be published late in 2026. In December 2025 my novel THE TYGER STRIPED BOY was published. Set in the chaos and drama of late eighteenth century London, it follows the story of theatre impresarios Rebecca and Joe, who also run an exotic animal menagerie. When the boy comes into their lives, Joe wants to show him for profit, but Rebecca wants to protect the child. Unknown to both of them, the boy hides a deadly secret.
