Louise Heal Kawai has been a translator of Japanese literature since 2006, translating several different genres of contemporary fiction. Besides the novels on this page, she has published short stories in online magazines and journals, play scripts and the odd poem. In 2022 she translated the international bestseller The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa, which was awarded Honor Book in the 2023 Global Literature in Libraries' YA translated book awards, and in 2025 she was awarded the Lindsley and Masao Miyoshi Translation Prize by Columbia University's Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture for her translation of Hideo Yokoyama's The North Light. Her latest release is My Grandfather, The Master Detective by Masateru Konishi.
