This is by no means the first book to focus on Trek’s lessons for living; it’s not even my first book on the achievability of Trek’s vision for the future.

But in an era as uncertain as this one, where Rules-for-Life books seem like a pretty good idea, why not turn to Trek for some inspiration?

Certainly the hundreds of stories are packed with insights and diverse perspective; certainly our beloved characters, from Kirk, Spock and McCoy to Picard, Riker, Data, Sisko, Janeway, Seven of Nine, Archer, T’Pol – and the NuTrek heroes we’re still getting to know – have provided us with endless heroism, encouragement and wisdom. There’s plenty to work with here.

But it’s important to note that through it all, there’s a set of values – a moral framework, an ethical model – that imbues the Trek canon with a consistent flow of courage and compassion, all flowing from a common source – a reservoir of strength and enlightenment that’s beyond fiction and drama, and built into us all. It’s this reservoir that we’re seeking to tap into in these 12 Trek rules for living!
