This book, by Charles Berner, is a modern rendition of the ancient and classical text known in the West as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. It is written in plain English and is a guide to be read and recited to the person who is dying or deceased. Its purpose is to ease the consciousness of a recently deceased person through death and to assist that individual into a favorable rebirth. Berner writes, that "there are three parts to the Guide itself. First, confronting the phenomena of death as they occur during the moments of death; second, reminding the person to confront and be responsible for the reality of the mind while in the intermediate state and third, methods of controlling desires when seeking rebirth."
