This is an elementary guide to the Galician language (also called Galego or Gallego) including offering an understanding of the culture of the region. This language is spoken by almost 3 million people in Galicia, Asturias, Castile and Leon as well as in Galician communities globally. Galician is a romance language, somewhat similar to Portuguese and derived from Latin in the 13th century. The language and the Galician region have a rich history.
