As the 20th century begins, the frontier of the Pacific Northwest is fading into the light of the modern age. But for farmhand Joe MacCready, a horror he had experienced in the deserted farmhouse has left his world in shadowy trauma, where he is regarded as an outcast and a liar. Then, he finds the chance for a new life with Mr. Kahl, the man he wished could have been his father, and the possibility of love with Kahl's fierce and fearless daughter, Josie. But the mystery of the old farmhouse, steeped in ghost stories, has deep roots in an ancient horror from the old world that has been hidden away in the post frontier of Washington state. A horror that Joe finds he cannot slip away from.
