I don't mean that in a mean way, but just on a rating scale. It isn't terrible, but there is also nothing really exciting about this read. There is a crime. New Girl feels out of place but eventually is the star to help them break the case. The most interesting thing about this book is the tense relationship with her daughter. Not many writers would have the mom be aware that she is the problem in that situation. That was a good deviation from the norm. Everything else is average Urban Fantasy.

This reads like it is part of a larger story. There isn't much explanation about the creatures or the world. You just figure it out as you listen to conversations. I prefer this method rather than listening to definitions and explanations. However, I know others prefer something different. If that bothers you, you may want to read the other stories first.

Love that it's in Atlanta. The narrator does great with supporting cast. I had to get used to her as the main character. The voice didn't quite match the cover picture 😊

Average Urban Fantasy

I have been desperate for books that are NOT focused around the MFC panting after some loser dude, and the DRC Files Deliver! These characters are AWESOME. The stories are tight, the characters well developed, and they are highly creative. This is not a formulaic series - while there are vampire, werewolf and dragon characters, they are not your typical 'I vant to suck your blood' cutouts. Kristen is a witch, but she is also a divorced mother trying to do her very difficult job while keeping a long distance relationship with her daughter who is also a witch - though her ex is doing his best to suffocate that part of their daughter. I see disaster for Jade there - you can't just stick your fingers in your ears and hum and expect to completely change your child without damaging her for life. I see problems coming with the bosses boss, the werewolf. The vampire is a self-centered ego maniac on the surface, but an interaction with a very powerful vampire during the case indicates there is more there than it appears on the surface. (I like that David, the V, Stinks! Literally ...) The boss, a dragon, is absolutely someone I would want to know. And the narrator, Christine, is excellent - I am looking up other books she has narrated. She pulls you in and offers the perfect voices for the characters. You want to sit down at the outdoor cafe they favor and just listen to their conversations.

The world building, or multiple world building in this case, is solid and well developed. Overall, while I have relied more and more on the library for books as most don't hold my attention long enough to encourage me to read them more than once ((If I even make it through the whole book)) I bought this whole series, as well as the first book of the spinoff set in Phoenix, AZ. So many books these days are so shallow that to find the DRC Files is like finding a diamond in a cat box!

HIGHLY recommended!

Hooray for no romance!

Kristen is starting a new job with the FBI or is she. She finds herself in a totally different squad. I will be honest when I saw cryptids in the title I was thinking moth man or a skunk ape but these cryptids are from a different dimension. We see Kristen working to get herself caught up to speed with her unit. They have a lot of challenges but Kristen is pulling her own weight. #CMCon26
