Magdala sat at the edge of the Sea of Galilee and smelled like fish and money. Miriam bat Syrus could read a man's trade position before he opened his mouth. Her father taught her to listen to what a man did not say. She learned to count everything.

Then she stopped counting. Something happened in a rented room with a cedar floor when she was fifteen, and afterward there were seven of her. Seven walls around one flame. The town called them seven demons. The physicians came with oil and incense. Her father stood outside the locked door every morning with a length of harbor cord, tying and untying it against his palm.

A man came to the well. He did not flinch. He did not perform. He said her name and he knew what was underneath it.

She followed him for three years. Managed the money with Joanna, wife of Herod's steward. Taught in villages where no one expected women to speak. Mapped the exits in Jerusalem when the apparatus began to close. Stayed on the hill when the men ran.

Three days later she went to a garden before dawn and found an empty room.
