Though it seemed to happen in the blink of an eye, the Bandwidth adventure was a multi-decade rollercoaster ride involving larger-than-life successes and devastating failures. The unbridled ambition of newly minted billionaires and high-profile tycoons created extraordinary value, unprecedented value destruction, and endless opportunities for a brave few.

This reflects tech’s past, present, and future—and is a story you won’t soon forget. Between the monumental breakup of AT&T, the largely unnoticed birth of the Internet, and the establishment of mobile communications and fiber optic networks, the early eighties were rife with upheaval. The collision of these four events ignited a revolution that would forever change how humankind worked, played, educated, and entertained. This boom was a time of insight, creativity, and courage accompanied by deception, fraud, and prison sentences. The pace of consolidation was fierce—but soon, the bubble burst. Few could see that the stage was set for a glorious rebirth.

No one knows this cycle better than Dan Caruso, one of the changemakers who largely shaped the modern communications age. At the dawn of the digital revolution, he was about to embark on an adventure that would impact his life for decades and permanently change the very essence of how people relate to each other on a daily basis.

For the first time, Caruso pulls back the curtain in Bandwidth, a no-holds-barred memoir that celebrates the pioneers who invented the Internet’s early backbones, the renegades who lit the fiber revolution, the antics that caused it to all come crashing down, and the new wave of entrepreneurs who rose the industry back from its ashes.

With insights into the cyclical nature of innovation and the indomitable spirit of human ingenuity, Bandwidth is a powerful saga that shines a light on how history may be repeating itself as the AI, quantum, and blockchain Boom cycle is taking hold.

I’ve never seen anything tell the story of telecom like this. Part story and part history told from the unique perspective of someone who rode the waves and came out on top.

Whether you are a telecom vet or completely unfamiliar you’ll enjoy this book.

Fantastic ride beginning to end

What could have been a story about one man’s success turned out to be a fascinating history of what of the biggest industries no one ever talks about. A journey through how we are able to do business and connect in the modern world (with plenty of acronyms)

An educational epic saga

I worked with Dan, although not directly. Our paths only crossed a couple times. He was an ops guy and I was in sales. After listening to his book I hope one day our paths cross, he was one of the best in our industry.

Great Historical Perspective

This is an excellent book! I was fortunate to work for a foreign telco and I was responsible for purchasing the backbone infrastructure for our internet backbone. I had the opportunity to meet with Dan first at Level 3 then at Zayo.
Dan glosses over his work with Zayo. He was a leader who had a staff second to none and showed great innovation. I have worked with many of the consolidators and they all had layers of problems integrating the network under one platform. This lead to many operational and billing issues. When I had a meeting in Denver with his operational head he explained that Zayo was able to integrate acquisitions by instantly putting them on Zayo’s platform. This sound easy but it is not, many times you run into resistance because the acquired company perceives that their platform is better. They may have been, but by sticking to your migration plan the transition was smooth.
I also admired Zayo’s ability to think outside the box. We were planning a 100 gig backbone deployment and as usual I would have three to 4 suppliers. Working for a large Asian carrier it always made sense to have AT&T as a provider, problem was their product was a couple years away. I was able to have AT&T resell me services from Zayo at the market rate. I also use Zayo as a provider on other paths. From my perspective this was a huge win for my company Zayo and AT&T. I knew that when AT&T had their product ready for market, they would have to sell to me at discounted wholesale rate I was receiving through Zayo.
I have worked with all the carriers Dan mentions and buying from his team was a true pleasure!

Excellent Capture of the industry!
