An escaped war criminal. A fallen teammate. A blackout that could start World War III.

When a Russian intelligence officer vanishes after a deadly raid in Ukraine, the world believes he is dead.

He isn’t.

Sergei Lebedev resurfaces inside the United States and unleashes a crippling cyberattack that collapses the American power grid. Cities go dark. Defenses go blind. As panic spreads, China prepares to strike Taiwan.

Defense Clandestine Service operator Matt Scales knows the blackout is not the real attack. It is the opening move.

Still reeling from the death of his teammate, Matt races to uncover how Lebedev escaped and why the same malicious code crippling America is now targeting Taiwan’s infrastructure. The answer points to a coordinated Russian-Chinese operation designed to paralyze U.S. response and assassinate Taiwan’s president before anyone can react.

With time running out, Matt teams up with April Knight, a former SEAL Team Six Black Squadron operator who once saved his life, and Chin Ho, a DOE physicist who first identified the grid-killing virus. Together, they hunt a traitor inside their own ranks while racing across continents to stop a war that will be over before the world realizes it has begun.

If they fail, America will descend into chaos, Taiwan will fall, and millions will die in the dark.

From the battlefields of Ukraine to the streets of Santa Barbara, Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow delivers tactical realism, relentless pacing, and high-stakes geopolitics. Perfect for readers of Jack Carr, Don Bentley, Mark Greaney, and Brad Taylor.

My audiobook review of Bear In The Dragons Shadow by Don Patterson: From the start, Bear In The Dragons Shadow pulls you in with an engaging, fast-moving story that is genuinely hard to stop listening to. It has that rare quality where just one more chapter turns into several, and I often found myself creating time to listen, taking extra dog walks or finding chores that let me keep the story going. While audiobooks are not usually my go-to form of entertainment (I tend to favor movies and traditional reading), this one stood out as especially compelling in audio format. A big part of that comes down to the narrator, who does a tremendous job bringing the story to life. His pacing, tone, and delivery keep the tension high and the plot moving, always leaving you wanting to know what happens next. One detail I particularly appreciated was his subtle use of accents for characters speaking English as a second language. It added authenticity without feeling overdone or distracting, helping differentiate characters and deepen immersion in the story. With a background of over 35 years in law enforcement including 17 years of frontline work as a K-9 handler in situations spanning all levels of risk, I found the authour’s ability to describe real tactical events to be exceptional. The realism in these scenes stands out and adds a layer of credibility that is hard to replicate. Another highlight is the vivid depiction of locations around Santa Barbara. The settings are real, and if you have never been there, the descriptions match the atmosphere and geography perfectly, making it easy to visualize every scene. Overall, this audiobook is an excellent listen and engaging, authentic, and expertly performed. Even for someone who does not typically prioritize audiobooks, this one proved how powerful the format can be when done right.
