When you read about someone sailing around the world, it’s usually a dotcom millionaire or a professional adventurer. Brave or Stupid? tells a very different story. It’s an everyman tale about a middle-aged, seasick electrician with no money who suddenly and for no reason decides to sail around the world. It’s the story of Yanne Larsson, a man with a dream born not out of a passion for sailing or a search for identity or the need for a challenge. This is the story of a simple handshake. One of the old-fashioned, ironclad ones.

A casual suggestion over wine with best friend Carl Andersson turns into one of those ideas that just won’t go away. Twenty-four hours later, a handshake decides it. The little details—buying a boat, learning to sail, and saving up money—take five years, but in 2002, the two men leave Helsingborg, Sweden on a three-year voyage that will change them forever. Storms, tropical diseases, drama, love, and comedy—their story is an adventure like no other. Brave or Stupid? is a book for anyone who has ever gone beyond what is sensible and realistic to discover a whole new world outside and a whole new person inside. This is a book for anyone who still believes in the power of dreams. And handshakes....

I discover this book through 59 north podcast. It is incredible that is not more widely known. I think that it belongs to the greatest sailing stories, It is funny, engaging and eye-opening . I read it twice and buy several copies for some friends. Ah, and I bought my first sailboat after the first reading …. Thanks Calle and Yanne!

This was an entertaining story with a lot of nice details and facts and humor. I love sailing stories and am a sailor of a boat similar to theirs and I long distance cruise as well . I will admit alcohol plays a key role in the sailing/cruising life .. not really a good role much of the time. Functional and less than functional alcoholism is rampant in the cruising world and really not humorous or cute as it is portrayed almost as a focal point in this book . I am not overly sensitive to this aspect of cruising or life in general but the over emphasis on everything booze is just over the top here. Read the first few chapters and you will see the ridiculous portrayal of how key consumption and over consumption of alcohol is in these “adult” men’s lives.. It took a lot away from the overall story .. which was a good one full of adventure and great information .. but seriously . Binge drinking , black outs, friends falling overboard drunk, memory loss and hang overs are really not funny .. well .. maybe once or twice in a story .. but as a key part of the entire structure and entertainment in the story ? it just rings as a rather overdone and outdated source of humor .. How funny is alcoholism and drunks and DUIs in our contemporary world ? .. Not to be rude but maybe it is a cultural thing with the Swedish I don’t understand ? It doesn’t translate well . . But having every single significant moment (not exaggerating) of this adventure revolve around some type of alcoholic beverage seemed much more immature and stupid than brave. So I guess that question is answered.
