The author can't remember his own story line

He opens this book with the captain claiming that he needs to learn German on the voyage to meet the king, I guess forgetting that in the first book he already spoke the language. Then at the end of this saga, he goes home as a Colonel forgetting he already announced his promotion when he visited the the year before. Very sloppy/editing. This has happened in other series, I'm done with this author.
