In the martial arts and similar mind-body traditions of the East, the body’s “center of gravity” is the source from which all movement and energy flow. It is located a few inches below the navel, in the center of the torso. Awareness of this center of gravity is extremely helpful in golf. In the backswing, when we make a good turn away from the target, it is our center of gravity that we coil around. As we make the transition and uncoil, it is the source from which the power of the swing emanates. When we make a good finish, it is our center of gravity that is pointing directly at the target. A common technical instruction is “to finish with your belt buckle pointing at the target.” For most people, the belt buckle is a few inches below the navel.
