The New York Times best-selling author of the Cat in the Stacks Mysteries and Digging Up the Dirt returns with the latest Southern Ladies Mystery....

It's autumn down south, and An'gel and Dickce Ducote are in Natchez, Mississippi, at the request of Mary Turner Catlin, the granddaughter of an old friend. Mary and her husband, Henry Howard, live in Cliffwood, one of the beautiful antebellum homes for which Natchez is famous. Odd things have been happening in the house for years, and the French Room in particular has become the focal point for spooky sensations.

The Ducotes suspect the ghostly goings-on are caused by the living, but when a relative of the Catlins is found dead in the room, An'gel and Dickce must sift through a haunted family history to catch a killer.

Fun story with a Nancy Drew feel but the detectives are much older. not completely predictable so fun right down to the end.

Fun Read.

the story was good. I wasn't a huge fan of the narrator, she enunciated nearly every. single. word. and that made it feel like it didn't flow well.

story was interesting

I am a fan of this series and the Cat in the Stacks series and how this narrator managed to so misread the characters is being me. The strong and always in control Angel comes across as a timid bitty. Angel sounds like she is asking everything as a question, never making her assertive statements. She makes Dickce sound like a man! It is just so off that it is hard to listen to.

Finishing it because I’m vested in the story. Narration is painful.

I liked the story. I’ve enjoyed many of her books. But I still love holding and reading the physical book. I guess I’m a bit old-fashioned that way. The storyteller was excellent, but would have liked 2 to make it easier to “picture” the characters better.

Enjoyable

I enjoy both of James’ intersecting series set in Athena, MS. Unfortunately, they changed the narrator for this book and I probably would have returned it if I wasn’t already committed to the series and characters. The narrator does a disservice to the main characters by making them sound decrepit, and makes Dixie sound mannish. I really hope they go back to the prior narrator or at least find someone better with better direction for the next installment!

Fun characters and cozy mystery vibe through this and cat in the stacks series’
