Rase is a ruler in desperate need of good alliances. Alesi is next in line to take over for the Sapphireclaw clan. She needs someone strong to align with. Which is why she is sent on behalf of her clan to make a trade agreement with Rase. As the new leader of the Emeraldclaw Clan, Rase has faced his fair share of challenges.
His brother threw him in prison. Now that he's free, Rase wants to restore Emeraldclaw's reputation. He faces nothing but opposition from his council. And his estate is a crumbling heap. A constant reminder of his own family's failures and betrayal.
He goes to the oracles and is surprised when they tell him Alesi from the Sapphireclaw Clan is his fated mates.
Surely they can align themselves in marriage, if it's for the good of their people. He and Alesi make for fast enemies. But trying to convince Alesi to be his mate is just political. A fortunate alliance, nothing more. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Alesi can rob him of breath just by walking into a room.
