Every year, for the past four decades, Dr. John Perry, head of the Twinkleton Paranormal Society, hosts a gala ball and invites the quaint Oregon village’s most notable citizens (both living and dead) to attend a Ghost Walk. This year is no different—with one exception.
This year, John Perry will vie for the role of Ghost of Honor.
On leave while he recovers from injuries sustained in the line of duty, FBI Special Agent Archie Crane returns to Twinkleton, Oregon—and soon finds himself suspected of homicide by Police Chief Beau Langham. Beau and Archie go way back, and not all the memories are good. Ten years ago, Archie broke Beau’s heart. Is Beau looking for revenge or does he really think Archie capable of murdering his eccentric former guardian?

from the first audiobook of hers I've heard, I understood the meaning of wordsmith.
now I understand what an incredible and creative soulsmith... or maybe only feelings-smith, she is.
the story line is clear, straightforward, logical and realistic. which one of us hasn't misunderstood their partner in their first relationship in highschool, only to discover that the partner misunderstood them just as much? which one of us hasn't waited for the best moment to say something important to a loved one, until it was too late and there was no more time to talk?
the writing is borderline poetic - not a word out of place or that you can think of a better one. there are no dramatic moments, there is no suspense, there is no fast-paced scene. and yet, the conflicts are realistic, well described, relatable.
the characters behave like real people, not made up characters (even if they are that :-). some are confused and get clarity, some are bad and stay that way, some are good but do bad things under bad circumstances and try their best to make amends. and some just get too deep into their own bad choices to find their way out.
this is one of those high quality, humble stories that make us think of~ and understand ourselves and our past, not the characters'. Right up there with "Stranger on the shore" (the lost son theme) and "Don't look back" this one will make you cry in pleasure, and wonder at the talent and creativity of the people on this earth.
ok, the bits with the seance are a bit weird, but they are not too outré, and they fit right in, exactly where they are, to make the resolution simple and softhearted.
there should be a special score for books like this one, because it's leagues above just a good book!
and then, there is the sweet, pleasant, moving voice of j.f.harding. nothing dramatic, nothing extravagant, just the perfect way to express the excellent story.
amazingly sweet soul searching
