Maauro, Dassa, and the Seachange flee Mystic, having dealt a deathblow to the pirate haven, but at a terrible cost.

Rasfel, organ-legged by those pirates, lies in frozen sleep aboard. Beyond hope, Maauro must find a way to resurrect the boy.

As Maauro continues her voyages, seeking meaning and purpose, she shapes course for Enshar, seeking knowledge of the fate of her ancient creators.

There, she must dare the sunken city of Barjan, where Robert Fenaday and Shasti Rainhell once fought a nightmare from the ancient past.

But was it the only terrible force buried there?

Unhappily left behind, Dassa and the crew fall victim to a conspiracy and must outwit a clever adversary or lose the ship and any hope for Rasfel.
