All rise... for Judge Stone.

The most respected citizen in Union Springs, Alabama (population 3,314), is Judge Mary Stone. She holds two responsibilities sacred: running her family farm and presiding over her courtroom. It's there she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South.

Criminally, it’s open-and-shut.

Ethically, there is no middle ground. Essentially, it’s a choice between life and death.

No judge can satisfy everyone. It would be dangerous to try. But Judge Stone is willing to fight to bring justice to the people and place she loves.

I figure James Patterson's role is to help introduce a new writer since he is one of the best and always anxious to help other writers. I try to read anything with his name on it with or without other writers. I am disabled so listening to Audible is my favorite pass time. Thankfully, this isn't virtual voice, it ruins the book. I really enjoyed the story and recommend the book.

I loved Viola's narration. I can see her as the judge, she is an excellent actress and very distinguished lady. The

Judge Stone is more than a legal thriller—it’s an experience.

Co-written by James Patterson and Viola Davis, and narrated by Davis herself, this story pulled me in from the very beginning and didn’t let go. What makes it especially powerful is that Viola Davis doesn’t just tell the story—she helped create it. You can feel her voice, her truth, and her lived experience woven into every scene.

There were moments when I had to pause—not because I was confused, but because I was feeling so much. The storytelling is so vivid and layered that it felt less like I was listening to a book and more like I was watching a movie unfold in my mind. The characters were incredibly real to me, especially Nova. I didn’t just hear her—I saw her, I understood her, and at times, I felt her.

As a Black woman who grew up in the South, in a small Louisiana town with a deeply rooted and complicated racial history, parts of this story hit close to home. While I have not experienced the level of trauma portrayed, the emotional undertones, the tension, and the unspoken truths felt very familiar. That authenticity is what makes this story resonate on a deeper level.

James Patterson brings the pace and structure we expect from a gripping thriller, but Viola Davis brings a richness of perspective and emotional depth that elevates the story into something more meaningful. Together, they created something that is both compelling and impactful.

And the narration? Exceptional. Viola Davis doesn’t just read the story—she embodies it. Every voice, every pause, every shift in tone adds another layer to the experience.

This isn’t just a book you listen to—it’s one you feel.

Highly recommend.
