Sometimes work can be murder.

Detective Sergeant Kiara Lui has just broken up a loud brawl between two blokes in front of the Warrigal Public Library. But just as she's about to leave the scene, a man plummets from the sky and slams into the bike rack right in front of her, dead.

Head of Library Services, Neville Adams, was hated by staff, borrowers, and in fact anybody who had ever met him. What might have tipped that hatred into outright murder? The building is quickly sealed, trapping all the suspects inside. Someone should be in custody within minutes.

Instead, the investigation spirals outward, ensnaring half the town, and possibly connecting to a missing-persons a case that has yet to be solved, and which has had the whole town talking. If Neville’s killer isn't found fast, their first victim may not be the last . . .

A darkly-funny, propulsive thriller from the bestselling author of Kill Your Husbands.

I overall enjoyed it, but when the author presents a group of suspects where a few are shifty/clearly hiding something and one who has no suspicion - obviously it’s going to be the one with no suspicion being laid on them for no reason right? I don’t want to spoil it for readers who may appreciate the story more but the timing of all of these people’s storylines and convergence on attempting the same thing at the same time wasn’t a “twist” for me but a heavy handed attempt to make the story more interesting that left me feeling like it was very forced and painfully unbelievable.

Story is both predictable and messy due to wild coincidences that felt forced

It was a good story ,not predictable and enjoyed the small town feel of the plot .

I enjoy the familiar names

Easy to follow twists and turns. Some unnecessary characters that try to trip you up but it was good. I wish there were specific voice actors for the characters consistently. The Ben perspective Kiara voice was bothering...

Great

The story was good, but it took a minute to figure out who was talking each time. The plot was good and kept me guessing

Lots of twists and turns

I'm very picky about detective, mystery, and thriller stories and I know within one chapter if I'm going to keep going. Took a chance on this because it was an Audible free-for-members option and I'd never read anything by Jack Heath. So glad I did!

Starting with the narration, I was drawn right in. It was perfectly paced and tuned. I've begun too many books where the narrator(s) sound unrelentingly angry or lecturing or monotonal with no modulation through the entire book. Not here!

This was truly pitch-perfect, capturing each character's vibe, which is so important in building a believable life readers care about following. Detective Kiara Lui was especially convincing: blasé or insistent or explanatory or loving (in her own way), as called for.

The plot! That is what keeps you up listening into the wee hours, sleepily rewinding because you can't stand to miss what happens next. Any great mystery must carefully drop clues so the reader has a fighting chance of figuring things out. Heath sure has the chops for that! Even if you catch on early what might be the true situation(s), there's plenty of doubt to go around. I love when authors make characters multifaceted and that's what Heath does here.

The police work is also very realistic. There's no illegal breaking and entering or coercion or a&$hole powermongering in the force (lazy writing imho) (don't worry this isn't a spoiler). I love detective stories where the law is respected so the story and characters and mysteries take center stage. Hella lotta drama available for authors to dig into without relying on irrational and distracting shortcuts! Agatha Christie had Poirot and Jack Heath has Kiara.

It doesn't take long for you to feel very sympathetic with all the characters who had motive. At least any of us who have ever had a "certain type" of boss!

But your sympathies will definitely be challenged. Even if you suspect the what's what, you'll have fun sleuthing out the who's who and the how of it all.

Excellent and well-crafted edge-of-seat story expertly narrated and believable
