Good short book

This is rather short, but good things come in small packages, right? I only brought and listened to this as I'd brought one of the authors works and wanted to see if the writing style was the same, it wasn't. This one was more serious and well written, it was as if the author had experienced some of what the main characters had been through their self. Obviously I don't even know if the author is male... I rambling, sorry. I liked the book but the narration was done by an American instead of a British narrator. I only bring this up as the book is set in the UK.
