A Best Book of the Year from The Observer

Narrated by the New York Times bestselling author Natalie Haynes herself, this audiobook is an extraordinary reimagining of the myth of Medea.

This is what no one tells you, in the songs sung about Jason and the Argo. This part of his quest has been forgotten, by everyone but me . . .

Jason and his Argonauts set sail to find the Golden Fleece. The journey is filled with danger, for him and everyone he meets. But if he ever reaches the distant land he seeks, he faces almost certain death.

Medea—priestess, witch, and daughter of a brutal king—has the power to save the life of a stranger. Will she betray her family and her home, and what will she demand in return?

Medea and Jason seize their one chance of a life together, as the gods intend. But their love is steeped in vengeance from the beginning, and no one—not even those closest to them—will be safe.

Based on the classic tragedy by Euripides, this is Medea as you've never seen her before . . .

Loved the deep reveal of Medea and her charming, sneaky husband Jason- not the hero he seems!

Fascinating and fun!

I enjoyed this retelling, Medea is a fascinating character, and of course I enjoy this version of her much more than the original telling.

a wonderful retelling

I love Natalie Haynes and the stories she creates. It’s very clear she did so much research for this book and they never fail to amaze me.

Per usual, the women never get a story until the women bring it to light.

I am a serious fan, and have great respect for the author’s scholarship; my appreciation of her narrative webs has deepened and this last retelling of Medea’s and Jason’s sagas has me gobsmacked with wonder. What I appreciate is her ability to weave the small stories of women, divine and non so divine, to imbue their voices with character and to bring them fully into a very intricate narrative. In lesser hands, this would simply be another picturesque retelling, but here, in this novel, it’s a rich tapestry of lives and experiences which transcend myth and become real on their own. Not since Circe by Miller have I been so impressed. I started rereading it as soon as I finished it. The narration is equally impressive and she just gets better with each novel. Brava!!

A masterpiece
