**This is Robert's story before he became the Robert you know in the Forty Proof Series.**

In 1876, we were called to Savannah, Georgia to help with an infestation of demons. If we'd known what we, my wife Evangeline, and I, were walking into, we'd have run the other way.

As it was, we shared tea with a vampire and stepped into a battle we did not understand until it was too late.

On the night we arrived, Evangeline went missing, taken from our room.

Now, in a strange city, filled with demons, and monsters, I must find her before those monsters make her one of their own.

The only question that remains is one for you, dear listener.

Are you brave enough to come with me on this journey, my friend? It is not for the weak of heart, but for those who believe that love is always strong enough...and that a kind soul or two can make all the difference in your life as you face the darkness.

**You can listen to this novella WITHOUT having listened to any of the other books in the Forty Proof Series. Robert's story continues in Midlife Bounty Hunter**

I think I liked this short novella. It was difficult for me to understand some of what he was reading due to his accent. But now I know the history of Robert and curious to see where this series will go.

Robert is one of the best side characters ever. Despite knowing so little of him in the beginning, he quickly became a favorite. The more you learn about him, the better he gets. This was a great insight into his past. Forever the best friend

I really liked the story line but the narrator was a but hard to listen to. I found myself having to rewind and listen again. His voice was a bit monotone for my liking and I had a hard time focusing on what he was saying.

great story line but...

Robert has always been one of my favorite characters in this series. Getting this short insight into his past makes me feel like I know him so much better. After listening to this, I want to start the whole series over from the beginning. The narrator did a fantastic job.

I love Robert!

"Robert" is a short but powerful prequel to Shannon Mayer’s "Forty Proof/Midlife Bounty Hunter" series. It tells the tragic backstory of Robert, the skeleton companion we later meet in the series. Far from humorous, this tale is sad and haunting, showing the painful events that led him to become what he is now.

Though brief, it feels essential. Robert’s history doesn’t just add depth to his character—it also suggests he may hold the key to uncovering who is really behind the sinister events in Savannah. That alone makes this story important for fans of the main series, since it provides context the heroine herself is still missing.

While it isn’t a light listen, it’s well-crafted and weaves seamlessly into the larger world Shannon Mayer has built. The narration is solid and delivers the emotional weight of the story, though not standout enough to bump the rating higher. Overall, both story and narration earn 4 stars from me—short, dark, and essential to the series.
