A mixed bag

I adored some stories, while some left me so bored or uncomfortable that I could not finish. The narrators of this anthology, for the most part, added nothing to the experience of reading, or they made the story unbearable to listen to, which I do not say lightly.

Most of these “best American short stories” were not compelling.

I’ve bought every yearly edition of this collection of ‘best stories’ since it first appeared. This one was a huge disappointment. For many years I’ve found several authors to follow because of powerful fiction published in it. No stories worth keeping here.
