France, July 1944: a month after the Allied landings in Normandy, and the liberation of Europe is underway. In the Pas-de-Calais, Nathalie Mercier, a young British Special Operations executive secret agent working with the French Resistance, disappears. In London, her husband, Owen Quinn, an officer with Royal Navy Intelligence, discovers the truth about her role in the Allies' sophisticated deception at the heart of D-Day. Appalled but determined, Owen sets off on a perilous hunt through France in search of his wife. With the help of the Resistance, he finds Nathalie, but then the bitterness of war and its insatiable appetite for revenge catch up with them in dramatic fashion. Based on real events of the Second World War, The Best of Our Spies is a thrilling tale of international intrigue, love, deception, and espionage.

A little long but so interesting. John Lee is a Chapin narrator and skies accents so it moves this book along much than if read in print. Good and fascinating backstory about D day. A great listen!

Superb and touching spy story!

Any additional comments?

Although I enjoyed the plot and characters, the book was way too long and filled with tedious descriptions of things that didn’t enter into the plot, hence, it dragged at times. The plot, while complex, was still easy to follow as an audio book, and it was very well narrated. There is nothing new here for anyone even vaguely familiar with WWII history, but the story has enough suspense to have kept me listening until the end. The author is at work on a follow-up novel. I plan to pass it up.

Above average WWII spy drama, but not great.

As usual, Alex‘s books are very entertaining. Usually no more than a few days to listen. Can’t wait for the next. The narrator John Lee as usual was superb. Overall, does not disappoint.

Great spy novel

John Lee is my favorite narrator but this weirdo accents? I thought the accents were dropped after the 1960’s war movies.

Great spy classic

This is the kind of novel that makes me want to read more about WWII history; though truth be told, I love the subject anyway. But there are so many facets of war that civilians like me cannot get a true sense of from memorizing historical facts and figures. This is just one of the reasons why Mr. Gerlis' book is so good. It piques your interest about how things really were. And in this crazy world, it behoves us to remember past mistakes.

Mr. Lee's narration was nothing less than perfect. He excelled in both the "-ations" - pronunciation, enunciation; as well as performance and accents. I'll make sure to look up other narrations by this excellent voice actor.
