The Ridgeline Fire is four thousand acres and growing. The Warren Haskell trial begins in one week. And someone just found remains in the burn zone.

Twenty-six years after Brianna Hartley disappeared into the Colorado wilderness, justice is finally within reach. Gemma is set to testify. Vera Hartley-Price, who has attended every legal proceeding in Elk Creek for a quarter century hoping for answers, is finally going to get them. But the mountains have other plans.

When firefighters report human remains in the path of the advancing wildfire, Gemma and Kira are deployed into an active fire zone to confirm and recover before the evidence burns. What they find deep in the Haskell family’s back country is the final piece of a case that was never supposed to be solved.

The trial will happen. The evidence will speak. But Warren Haskell has spent twenty-six years being the most untouchable man in Elk Creek and he didn’t build that protection to abandon it now.

In a season of fire and reckoning, Gemma will finally learn whether the truth is enough. And whether the mountains that kept Brianna’s secret so long are finally ready to let it go.

Perfect for fans of C.J. Box, Dana Stabenow, and Nevada Barr. The Burning Season is the culmination of the cold case arc, emotional, propulsive, and deeply satisfying.

Book 5 of a series and had to stop at chapter 7, I’ve tried to disregard the blatant changes to the storyline from previous books and it’s just too much. A trial for just one murder when in the last book the defendant had killed a person to keep her quiet and there is no mention at all of this person & the events! It’s just gone from the story. Another character who to my opinion should not have been charged with anything since the person he hurt had kept silent and taken money for 25 years in which she could have prevented years of suffering for that family. He did not go there with intent to murder or harm her but it escalated to an injury. If anything he should have been tried for assault, but now he’s serving 8 years for attempted murder, so ridiculous.
It’s like the author is trying to write Stand Alone books but that’s not possible since the storyline is continuing through the series with the same main characters. So with this she’s changing or deleting previous events to maybe try to make the story more interesting. I don’t know but for a series of books this is just too frustrating on the changes when the author should remember what was previously written it makes it more unbelievable and a waste of time.

Horrible changes to the storyline from what was previously written.
