When Detective Mark Turpin is assigned the task of investigating the death of a local businessman, the case is first thought to be one of accidental drowning.

Until a bullet hole is found where the victim fell into the River Thames.

Then a number of graves are unearthed at a disused airfield site being redeveloped by the dead man, exposing a horrific secret and plunging Mark into one of the darkest investigations of his career.

After two more bodies are discovered amongst the burnt-out ruins of a building on a nearby industrial estate, Mark realises that a serial killer is at large.

Except as the police draw closer, the killer already has their next victim in their sights – and both have disappeared without a trace…

The Eleventh Grave is the sixth book in the Detective Mark Turpin series from USA Today bestselling author Rachel Amphlett, and perfect for fans of fast paced twisty mysteries.

I have just listened to the whole series of Mark Turpin novels one after another and I’d say this one is probably the weakest, I can’t say why without spoilers but after listening to the previous books I will say that it just seems a very unlikely thing for the character to do.

Moving on, the story is pretty good otherwise with plenty of interesting characters and clues to get you thinking. One problem for me is that the team never seem to “work up” much of the evidence they come across before rushing off to arrest their “suspect” leading to several false arrests before they get to the truth. But of course it’s fiction!

The other thing that began to irk me slightly is that Turpin always gets called “Mark” whilst West is always just “West” it’s a minor niggle in the scheme of things but the constant references to “Mark and West” (rather than “Mark & Jan” or “Turpin and West”) irritated me more than it should!

All in all it’s a pretty good read but not a great one. The narration is excellent though.

Not a bad series
