Quite an incredible novel, about a woman who had many "firsts" in a man's world.

Quite an incredible novel by Lisa Brace about a woman who had many "firsts" in a man's world, around the turn of the 20th century. Drama, war, friendships, love... I couldn't stop listening! The novel has many twists and turns. The narration by Alice Sockett, which is how I found the book, is really lovely, with wonderful tone and pacing. I really didn't want the story to end!

Captivating Read “Listen”; Narrator great!

I had it in my queue for a bit, but once I started it wanted more time to be able to listen (“read” via Audible) than what I always had. The ‘what next?’ Keeps you tiring the pages. Overall I found the story compelling. For so much of the book, I wanted Evelyn to be real, but the ending that you read of right at the start weighed heavy. The way it played out keeps the book in my mind.

I found the contrast in women’s roles between now and the book’s setting very interesting, as they brought back stories my grandmothers shared with me.


I listened to the book on Audible.

The narrator, Alice Sockett was terrific! Ms Sockett did a terrific job with the varied voices , whether female or not, and coveying the characters’ emotions effectively through tone modulation. I’m American and I could easily understand dialogue.

A Trailblazing Tale

A fantastic historical novel of a woman making her way in a man’s world. This story was so realistic I had to double check that it wasn’t actually a biography.
A woman pushing the boundaries of what women are allowed to do - in a time when women were only expected to get married and become a mother. This books highlights how long it has taken for women to make progress in being control of their own lives, and in many ways points out how much work is yet to be done.
Once again Alice Socket delivers a stellar performance. I look forward to hearing more from her!

Weak storyline.

Save your credit! Narration was fine but overall the storyline was weak, felt very undeveloped.
