Every day, Mercy Hess walks home from her babysitting job and sees a particular driver zoom by. Always the same driver, yet always a different car. One blustery day, the driver slows and offers Mercy - who is drenched - a lift.

Throwing caution to the wind, she accepts. The driver’s name is Charlie Westman, and she finds herself drawn to him...and accepting more than one ride from him as the days go on. But he’s an Englischer and falling for him means leaving everything she knows and loves.

Elam Fisher has always loved Mercy Hess. He dreams of a bright future together and plans to court her - as soon as he gets up the courage. But he soon realizes Mercy isn’t interested in him - she’s seeing someone else. An Englischer. Knowing he can’t compete with that and not even wanting to, Elam struggles to forget Mercy.
