A throne falls to voracious teeth. An ancient power lies buried beneath the streets. A reluctant heir flees into predator lands. Can he reclaim his crown and unleash the fire in his blood before his people are butchered and his world devoured? Asher has spent his life running from responsibility. But when tragedy strikes and the Rabbethi kingdom is threatened by a bloodthirsty horde, he discovers there’s nowhere left to run. With his people fractured and their survival uncertain, Asher must become the one thing he has always feared – king. The crown is heavy upon his head, and the fate of the world is in his paws. This reluctant hero must choose: become the leader his people need or let the world be swallowed in blood and shadow. Perfect for fans of Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy world-building, John Gwynne’s brutal battles, and the anthropomorphic animal sagas of Brian Jacques.

Well this one sits nicely in the middle 😂
I really enjoyed that this book didn’t hold back from really diving in to what good and evil look like and how they are choices each of our characters has to make that shapes them. It isn’t predator vs. prey because every group has the capacity to make good or bad decisions. It also means that it tackles the whole question of what do the predators eat when the animals are sentient… 😬
Our MC is Asher and he’s a great voice to follow. I always appreciate it when a character goes through actual growth and Asher is thrust into growth big time. He fumbles sometimes but deep down his good heart always prevails.
I’m interested in more of the world building and history (which I assume we’ll get more if in future books) because I feel like any of my questions about how it all works all have answers. And I want them!
All in all, this was a solid start to what I hope will be many more books to come!
Story is captivating!
