Anabel Foster is the eldest child of the late Reverend Frederick Foster, who died when she was eleven, leaving her and two younger brothers and his widow, heavily pregnant with a fourth child. Over the past 14 years they have survived on the modest settlement left to Mrs Foster, more recently supplemented by Anabel gaining employment as secretary to an aristocratic lady. A particular incident, misinterpreted by Anabel, unfortunately brings her to the notice of Giles Mortimer, Marquis of Telford. Her apology is insufficient to placate the Marquis, who devises other ways to exact retribution.
