The Mighty Jungle

The two protagonists in John A. Bercaw's new adventure, a warrant officer and a second lieutenant, don't comprehend the full extent of the peril awaiting them when their helicopter crashes into the jungle of Vietnam.

All the warrant officer had to do was fly a few newly assigned officers on a tour over their area of operations. It was an easy mission, and he didn't anticipate the enemy shooting down the helicopter and killing most of the passengers and crew. The only other survivor is the inexperienced second lieutenant. The warrant officer fears that his new companion will be useless in the struggle for survival ahead of them.

As the two soldiers confront the Vietcong and the many challenges of the harsh landscape, they gain the level of trust and respect for each other that only arises from extreme situations. They both realize that it will take nothing short of a miracle for them to make it out of the jungle alive.

Story of Survival

I personally know the author from a common love of motorcycle touring from 10 to 15 years ago. To know John Bercaw is a rare and wonderful thing as he has a knack of displaying a rather humble and modest person. But his core values and view of life is rock steady and precious as solid gold.

The Mighty Jungle is a good short story, but I believe authentic in the voice and mindset of the time and place of the book. I was impressed by the audiobook production on how I knew this was John's writing and speaking style.
