The New Colossus

The New Colossus is the poem inscribed on a bronze plaque within the pedestal on which stands, overlooking New York harbor, the Statute of liberty, a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata, a tablet evoking the law, upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. This excerpt has no doubt been read or heard by millions and sums up the ideals of the nation and humanity. "…Give me your tired, your poor,
