“A masterpiece that can compare with Steinbeck’s East of Eden. … Some books make you laugh; some make you cry; some make you think. The Prince of Tides is a rarity: It does all three.” — Detroit Free Press

A modern American classic and a family saga that spans decades, this is the story of the volatile Tom Wingo, his brilliant but troubled twin sister, Savannah, and the complex and damaging family legacy they share. Moving between the sparkling glamour of New York City and the vanishing beauty of the South Carolina low country, The Prince of Tides is Pat Conroy’s masterwork.

“A big, sprawling saga of a novel…the kind you hole up with and spend some days with and put down feeling you have emerged from a terrible, wonderful spell.” San Francisco Chronicle

“A literary gem . . . The Prince of Tides is in the best tradition of novel writing. It is an engrossing story of unforgettable characters.” —The Pittsburgh Press

The Prince of Tides is a family epic of the highest order––a beautiful, brilliant, and brutal novel that explores the darkest depths of human depravity and failure even as it reaches heroically for reconciliation and redemption

Beautiful, Brilliant, Emotionally Brutal

I burned thru this book enjoying every chapter after the intro. My only critique would be that a few parts were unnecessarily graphic but I guess moderation would have softened the impression

Raw and powerful like an epic, opposite of a fairy tale

Pat Conroy was a Master Wordsmith. His writing accurately describes each situation, puts you right there and his words evoke all the emotions (good, bad and ugly) for the scenario. This is a classic read. I believe this is my favorite Conroy book so far. As for the narrator, he is the perfect Tom Wingo, cadence, gravel and drawl.

Beautifully written

It’s so rare to find an author who has a grasp of the language, a theme to convey, and the eloquence to convey it in a powerful story. This is my first Conroy novel, but it won’t be my last. I hope I just found my favorite contemporary novelist!

Best book this year!

Exceptional, so much depth, fantastic narration. An absolutely unpredictable story and endearing. The narrator made this really over the top.
