Return to the opulent world of Elfhame, filled with intrigue, betrayal, and dangerous desires, with this second book of a captivating duology from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black!

An imprisoned prince. A vengeful queen. And a battle that will determine the future of Elfhame.

Prince Oak is paying for his betrayal. Imprisoned in the icy north and bound to the will of a monstrous new queen, he must rely on charm and calculation to survive. With High King Cardan and High Queen Jude willing to use any means necessary to retrieve their stolen heir, Oak will have to decide whether to attempt regaining the trust of the girl he’s always loved or to remain loyal to Elfhame and hand over the means to end her reign—even if it means ending Wren, too.

With a new war looming on the horizon and treachery lurking in every corner, neither Oak’s guile nor his wit will be enough to keep everyone he loves alive. It’s just a question of whom he will doom. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black comes the stunning blood-soaked conclusion to the Stolen Heir duology.

The VA gave a wonderful performance in giving the entire cast of new and beloved characters life in this conclusion.

The story wraps up so well. Whereas the stolen heir was a little slower paced, all themes and narrative threads are picked up and finished in full here. Once again, the author has given us a story that delights, thrills, and makes us reflect. The wait for this sequel was agonising but worth every moment of anxious anticipation!

Fantastic Conclusion!

Really loved the narrators voice and how it changed for each character! I do wish we had Wrens’s point of view in this book as well …..maybe switching from oak to wren to get to know them each a little bit better…but I just love being back in elfhame, so I’ll take what I can get. Overall for me, seeing and Jude and Cardan again were the highlights of the book. They are just top tier, their chemistry is unmatched and I can’t wait for another book in Jude’s pov again

Loved seeing my babies Jude and Cardan again

The story developed very well, even more so after the end of the last book and I was very happy with the way the conflicts evolved! I loved the appearances of Jude and Cardan, as well as other characters from the previous books.
It's a great addition to the universe and paves the way for other books that explore the rest of the fairy world.
I didn't really like the narrator, his reading doesn't convey the characters' personalities well and is a little far from Oak's voice, and in Wren's case even more so.

A fun extension of the universe

This story is wonderfully done, I would read many more books just like it, but the narration was very hard to get through. The lack of emotion and changing voices was not enjoyable, let alone the many either incorrect or changed (from the OG series) pronunciations.

Bad narration

This was a satisfying wrap-up to the duology.
I enjoyed seeing the characters from the original trilogy. And I was delighted by the little Kaye & Roiben easter-egg from the Lake of Masks. (Could this be a hint at another Kaye & Roiben book? I hope so.) I also loved the little hints we had for the future of Elfame, specifically our High King & Queen. I think we are all dying to see what will come of them in any future installments.
However, this book compared to the first book was a trifle boring. There was a lot more chemistry with Oak & Wren in the first book. But seeing some of the characters from the trilogy did almost make up for that. Overall I felt like we were missing a lot of bonding moments from Oak & Wren. At some points I found myself asking “Okay why does he love her so much?”. In the first book of the duology their bond was sooo apparent, and the cliffhanger— just heartbreaking. But this book did not tug at your heartstrings like the first one. Although it did certainly have its moments.
Overall I love the series and look forward to more from Holly Black.
As for the narrator… he could have done better. I felt a lot of the voice he did were all wrong. He should have sampled some of the audiobooks from Modern Fairy Tales and TCP trilogy.

Delightful, but not riveting.
