Very informative

As a Vietnam combat vet(Marine) I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was White, a new 2dLt and a Rifle Platoon Commander during TET in 1968. I was scared to death of making a mistake but I had a Black Platoon Sergeant on his second tour and I was smart enough to listen to him. He’s passed now but I sure miss him because he no doubt saved my life many times. I have to tell one story about him though. In April’68 he came to me and said that the Black Marines in our Platoon were complaining about the 6x6 trucks flying a Confederate flag on their fenders. I brought the complaint to my Company Commander, a Captain, who said there was nothing he could do because he wasn’t in charge of the Motor Pool. Only the Battalion Commander could order a change. So I asked him to ask the Battalion Commander. The next day he came back to me and said that the Battalion Commander refused to do anything because he didn’t see a problem since “that Confederate flag flew outside my high school in Tallahassee, Florida and I’m not about to have it taken down“. My Platoon Sgt took the word back to the Black Marines but he was able to keep things calm because he knew I had tried.

Excellent recount of Viet Nam I remember, Saigon 66 - 67. Roy Woods news reporter from WVON Chicago interviewed me in April 1966 in Saigon. The report aired on WVon in Chicago.
