Nonfiction master Russell Freedman illuminates for young readers the complex and rarely discussed subject of World War I. The tangled relationships and alliances of many nations, the introduction of modern weaponry, and top-level military decisions that resulted in thousands upon thousands of casualties all contributed to the "great war," which people hoped and believed would be the only conflict of its kind. In this clear and authoritative account, the Newbery Medal-winning author shows the ways in which the seeds of a second world war were sown in the first. This book is very easy to follow and gives a clear understanding of what sparked the war and which sides the various countries were on. Very interesting and a great read.

Clear Understanding

What made the experience of listening to The War to End All Wars: World War I the most enjoyable?

Overall the book is engaging and covers the basics. But that is about all. It really left me wanting. Even in the way it covered the basic information of World War I, I would've liked it to go into a bit more depth, or even a little commentary about those events Freedman touches on.

Good but too short

We listened to this book as part of our WW1 study in our homeschool. It was a great addition to the information we were already studying. I thought the introduction and conclusion were done very well. The middle section was at times a little bit overwhelming for my students, with details of certain battles.
Although it was appropriate for my middle schooler, it made us queasy to listen during lunch. 😅

A great overview
