absolutely beautiful

this is not just a beautiful fantasy book, it's a beautiful book period. this is probably the most well written book I've ever read.

The ending was fantastic

The ending was great but it took a while to get there. This one is a real slow burn.

Original fantasy story with historical undertones. Very well written and narrated.
Both the author and VA did a great job. All major characters are distinct both in personalities and voices. This makes for an easy and nice listen.

The world itself feels a bit like Italian peninsula during renaissance (which is no doubt what the author was going for).

No quibbles or issues found with this piece. If you like fantasy with a touch of history, this one is for you.

The prose is incredibly sumptuous and descriptive.

The book ends somewhat quickly. There are so many story threads that are cut when the climax finishes. It’s unexpectedly tidy. These days everything is a trilogy or more so a self contained one volume story seems strange in 2024. Overall this book is a classic for good reason.

enjoyed more than I thought

I struggled to start this book but by the end I wish it didn't end and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of names and fine details but it did come together nicely at the end, although the ending wasn't quite to my satisfaction. I am really glad I pushed through and finished the book.
