Monica Erling hoped her intended visit to the Wilshire Gallery would avail her a special invitation by its guest artist, Sebastian White Eagle, to meet with his tribe's Elders for permission to conduct research on his reservation. She headed the Dept. of Native Indian Cultures at the Smithsonian Institute. His tribe's religion was of utmost importance to her and ancient reporting decades ago denounced its validity. She hoped to disprove those findings.

His legacy was to safeguard his culture, songs, and folklore before it became lost to them forever. Together, they could help each other's cause.
