Looking Anew at the Yoke

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

We imagine a team of oxen pulling,

As if we’re sharing the load equally.

In this idea, we are, of course, the weaker link,

The limitation.

But we don’t get a yoke.

We get an invitation to the man with the yoke.

And the Greek word isn’t only used for oxen,

But also describes a scale.

Picture a man carrying water with a yoke,

A friend tucked in beside him.

The one carrying the water is the limitation.

Which, with the Lord, is, of course, no limitation at all.
