  • Narcissists & Flying Monkeys
    Apr 10 2026

A high-profile sheriff is in the news, the word narcissist is getting thrown around, and Jeff brought a printed copy of the DSM-5 to settle it. Five out of nine traits gets you the diagnosis. The conversation goes about where you'd expect it to from there — and then somewhere you wouldn't.

Jeff and Stephen get into why narcissistic leaders don't just appear in churches but get actively recruited there, what makes someone a "flying monkey" defending a leader they should probably leave, and the wound underneath the whole thing. Stephen tells the story of asking a pastor a real question at 21 and being told it was a stupid one. Jeff confesses to doing the Donald Trump table-clearing thing at his own family dinners.

The hardest part of the episode is the diagnosis they land on: the church doesn't just tolerate this stuff. It selects for it. And the people most hurt by it tend to leave one narcissistic system and walk straight into another.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not crazy. And you're not the only one.

Two white dudes talking about what it's like to be a women in the church and in today's society. They know. Stephen and Jeff about to step into it, and with the best of intentions — covering the role and dignity of women in the church and in society, where the Bible actually lands on it, and where the church has done real damage by getting it wrong.

They get into the MacArthur/Beth Moore moment, what 1 Timothy 3 actually says about female deacons (it may not be what you think), the egalitarian arguments worth a serious hearing, and what Augustine said about women and sexual violence in 410 AD that was genuinely revolutionary. Also: the end of Judges, which is a lot.

The conversation gets personal too. Stephen has four daughters. Jeff has three sons. This topic affects them both in completely different ways.

A beloved actor takes his own life after decades of battling bipolar disorder — and it raises a question the church has fumbled for too long: how should Christians think about mental health, medication, and the limits of "just pray more"?

Jeff and Stephen get honest about depression, the stigma around meds, why refusing help can actually be sinful pride, and what William Cooper's taxi ride to London Bridge teaches us about common grace.

If you're struggling, you're not alone — and God isn't mad at you for needing help.
