I thought the content was overall quite good, and I learned more than a few things I was unaware of previously. However, (Here is the double-edged sword part) though I found Vivica Reimann's reading as an obvious polyglot cool... at first, it started to grate on my nerves by the end of the book.

Pronouncing "Paris" in French a million and a half times became annoying. When speaking of Kings from the house of Plantagenet (planˈtajənət), her choice to pronounce them in the French language was a little off-putting (Plantagenêt) since histories of England nearly always pronounce this royal household in the English manner. Understandably this book is about French history, but it was somehow jarring to this American ear. Even more jarring was her pronunciation of Hitler at the end of the book with.... French pronunciation? German pronunciation? I have never heard Hitler's name pronounced that way? But the most annoying thing for me was her insistence on naming every year in the history in long-form. 1930 (for example) was never used, instead this would be read "nineteen hundred and thirty?" And lastly, her reading was very s l o w and for the first time I had to increase the speed to 1.2 to get through it.

Despite my admitted nitpicking, the performance was otherwise quite good and I recommend the book as a whole.

A double-edged sword

I'm getting ready for a trip to France. I thought it would be good to brush up on some French history. This audiobook version made listening to France's history so easy and engaging. I really enjoy the Celtic and Middle Ages. Haynes did a great job covering the subject. The narrator has a pleasant clear voice and I enjoyed her pronunciation of French Names and words. Overall, it was a great audiobook and a very enjoyable listen.
