A shadow has fallen at the edges of the Empire of Gis. The city of Kulaba is threatened by an enemy that has been pushed too far. They have embraced a dark God only bent on destruction.

The Empire sends the Burner Mashda with an army of conscripts to secure the city and stop this evil from spreading. Zizi finds himself as one of the conscripts, pulled from his home, and searching for why they fight. But what they find will challenge the very foundations of their beliefs.

Good story but wish i had read instead of listened

Liked the story and the twist on expectations but the reader's overly dramatic emphasis' and annoying accent or pronounciations ruined the experience for me.

rich and complex characters in a diverse world

really enjoyed this story. the narration took a minute to get used to because of his unique accent but the narrator is very talented and reeled me in.

Rich, interesting world!

This book does a great job at creating rich cultures, landscapes, and languages that suck you right into the world. A little slow in the beginning, the story picks up quickly and I listened all the way through in a couple of days. Highly recommend!
