The advert also appeared in several other Southern African newspapers. Tony McManus saw the ad, and though not stated, he knew it was about seeking volunteer recruits to join a mercenary force being formed to go to the Congo to fight in a civil war. He was intrigued. It promised good pay in US dollars and probably danger money. But it also promised risk and adventure; that was what he was looking for.
