A Fatherless People: The Secret Story of How the Nigerians Missed the Road to the Promised Land tells the story of Nigeria from its early conceptualization by British colonialists in the aftermath of the abolition of the slave trade up to the present day. Comprehensive and compelling, it confirms Dele Ogun as one of the foremost experts on Africa in the modern era.

The book starts off well. the intent is to show the hand of the British in Nigeria. And more importantly how a lot of ethnic groups never had problems and should not be having problems before the British with each other.
A particular romanticizing of Obafemi Awolowo and other post-independence leaders damage a good part of the book. Ommsions of their damages are also glaring. Only Nnamdi Azikwe of the Igbo stock does he bash.
It's a tricky position to try and thread. But the intention of a untied Southern Nigeria is well-intentioned. The methods are hard to sallow. As it should be for good reason.
A very controversial angle.
