In 1783 peace has been declared, but war still rages in the heart of Lark Benton.

Never did Lark think she’d want to escape Emerson Fielding, the man she’s loved all her life. But when he betrays her, she flees Williamsburg for Annapolis, taking refuge in the nation’s temporary capital. There lark throws herself into a new circle of friends who force her to examine all she believes.

Emerson follows, determined to reclaim his betrothed. Surprised when she refuses to return with him, he realizes that in this new nation he has come to call his own, duty is no longer enough. He must learn to open his heart and soul to something greater - before he loses all he should have been fighting to hold.

I love Roseanna White's stories. They're clean romances and the characters always have flaws that make them human and problems that keep you turning the pages. Fun read appropriate for tweens and above.

Great plot and characters

Roseanna White excels in historical fiction narratives. Her well researched topics become fertile soil for her gift of perceiving natural consequences and tensions that particular era would have presented. Her characters are well developed so it is a joy to come along in the audio narration to follow them in the unfolding and resolution of their story. I greatly enjoyed this story set at the end of the Revolutionary war. Wonderful insights and excellently crafted.

Superb historical narrative with a good dose of moral dilemmas creating tension

While this book does deal with serious subjects, the overall feel is light and fun. I don’t usually enjoy stories where one of the characters is unfaithful but Emerson’s redemption arc is so satisfying that even I was able to forgive him! He and Lark both come to know themselves better throughout and are able to grow as a result. Very well written! A delightful group of supporting characters, particularly Mrs. Green, who is forever quoting Benjamin Franklin, and the ever bright and cheerful Sena Randall round everything out nicely.

Unfortunately, the narration is poor and does not do the book justice. The narrator’s inflections are bizarre, she sounds bored half the time, and the accents —— it would’ve been better if she had just spoken in her normal voice.

Delightful Historical Romance

This well-written story contained lots of interesting history, as well a good love story. The narrator was not the best. Her acting sounding artificial, and she needs to work on her voices. It was difficult to listen to her at times, but still worth it.

Great history

A post-Revolutionary War setting, a clean romance, historical tidbits, witty dialogue, awesome secondary characters, and quotes from Benjamin Franklin! You can't go wrong with this one.
