In this account of the bloodiest war fought on American soil, Brooks Simpson recounts the events of the war from the opening salvo at Fort Sumter through the battlefields of Gettysburg and Shiloh to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House.
A History of the Civil War brings to life the realities of the war and the people who lived through it. It explains how the politics around slavery led to an unbridgeable divide between the North and South, and examines the strategies that led to the Union's eventual victory in 1865.

The book also demonstrated the ramifications of the war leading all the way up to the current day. The social and political climate created from the war can still be felt today.
I am the son of a history professor and learning about the civil war was part of my childhood. I have visited many of the battlefields that were spoken about in this book and so I come to this book with a heightened interest and excitement.
I will add that I was asked to review this book in return for a free download.
There were some details in the book that I really appreciated: as the book discussed major battles from the civil war, the author gave a list of the amount of soldiers involved, the detail surrounding the battles and the strategic advantage or disadvantage of each side.
This was a really good listen. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the civil war
