The best stories subtly weave themes and characters and symbols into a stunning final tapestry. For many Christians, sadly, the Old Testament is merely a jumble of moralistic stories and weird rituals, genealogies, and historical chronicles. What is the point of it all, and what does it have to do with Jesus?

In this short and easy to listen audiobook, Leithart gives a sweeping overview of the Bible, its stories, and the patterns and symbols that recur throughout it, highlighting the ways many of the little stories look forward to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus himself.

Although the audiobook is lots of fun, the lessons it teaches are far from trivial. The Gospels say again and again Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Christians need to learn to read the Old Testament the way Jesus and the Apostles read it, so that we can delight in the word of God and encounter him in its stories.

This audiobook can be easily listened to by high school students and includes review questions for anyone who wants to use it in their curriculum. However, it will also give anyone familiar with scripture much to think about.

I am 65 years old and was raised as a pastor's son. I went to a Christian college and have taught in church and Christian schools for more the more years. But I have never understood the OT better than after reading this book. I will read it again again.

In this readable whirlwind tour through the Hebrew scriptures, Leithart shows how God’s Word is not a collection of moral fables designed to teach discreet lessons, but ever-deepening variations on a single theme: God seeking to dwell with His people and turn all of creation into Eden. Accounts that are often neglected or puzzle modern readers take on exciting clarity, and Leithart uses his sharp ear for typology to show the organic unity the Holy Spirit has inscribed in its pages, from first Adam to Last.

This is an enlightening book very much worth reading. However, it doesn’t work as an audiobook. Almost every paragraph has a multiple citations from the Bible, and the reader reads aloud each book name and chapter:verse numbers. Very distracting. There are also multiple schematic charts that do not really work on audio, nor do the discussion questions at the end of each chapter. Strongly recommend this book but only in printed form.
